Sonic Revolution: A Celebration of the MC5 - Live at London's 100 Club

One of the most powerful and revolutionary American rock bands of all time, the MC5 came out of Detroit with hard-driving twin-guitar attack, a potent blend of hard rock, psychedelia, and free jazz, and a militant political stance that insured their ideas were every bit as provocative as their music. While the band were infamous in their heyday, they never broke through to the mass audience outside of their hometown, but proved to be massively influential in the years following their breakup. In 2002, the three surviving members of the group -- guitarist Wayne Kramer, bassist Michael Davis, and drummer Dennis Thompson -- played a special concert at London's 100 Club, in which they played a set of classic MC5 tunes with the help of some notable guests. MC5: Sonic Revolution -- A Celebration of the MC5 features Ian Astbury of the Cult, Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, Dave Vanian of the Damned, Nicke Royale of the Hellacopters, and others joining Kramer, Davis, and Thompson for a rip-roaring trip through the MC5 songbook. The film also includes archival footage of the MC5 in their prime, including U.S. government surveillance film of their performance at the protests which coincided with the 1968 Democratic National Convention. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide MC5 Wayne Kramer Dennis Thompson

Peru. Iquitos is a town isolated in the middle of the jungle at the turn of the century. On the outskirts, a few shacks are rotting in the mud. In the center are the splendid houses of the nouveaux-riches rubber barons. It is in this setting, rich in grotesque contrast, that Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald-Fitzcarraldo, as the natives call him-has his dream of bringing together Enrico Caruso and Sarah Bernhardt for one great celebration of Grand Opera. To finace this fantastic dream, Fitzcarraldo decides to exploit a vast area of rubber tires growing beyond the impassable Ucayala Falls. To circumvent this barrier, he literally has his huge steamboat lifted over a mountain from one branch of the river to the other. With the aid of a tribe of Indians bewitched by records featuring the voice of the greatest singer of all time, Fitzcarraldo fights fever, mosquitos and suffocating heat to achieve the impossible... The Man With the Movie Camera

Soviet director Dziga Vertov's experimental film grew out of his belief, shared by his editor, Elizaveta Svilova (who was also his wife), and his cinematographer, Mikhail Kaufman (also his brother), that the true goal of cinema should be to present life as it is lived. To that end, the filmmakers offer a day-in-the-life portrait of a city from dawn until dusk, though they actually shot their footage in several cities, including Moscow, Kiev, and Odessa. After an opening statement, there are no words in the film (neither voice-over nor titles), but the dazzling imagery, kinetically edited, is eloquent enough. This is a celebration of the modern city that concentrates on its buildings and machinery more than its citizens, and it's possible to read its upbeat tone as a vindication of Soviet state progress, though much of the film's ultimate impact is universal. The Image Entertainment DVD edition of the film offers a musical score composed from notes left by the director, which adds greatly to the impact of the film. ~ Tom Wiener, All Movie Guide Dziga Vertov

October

Borrowing its title from a book by American journalist John Reed (of Reds fame), Sergei Eisenstein's Ten Days That Shook the World reenacts the crucial week-and-a-half in October, 1918, when the Russian Kerensky regime was toppled by the Bolsheviks. While Eisenstein takes certain liberties in characterization--those opposing the Bolsheviks are depicted as mental defectives or grossly overweight clowns--his re-creation of such events as the storming of the Winter Palace are painstakingly meticulous. The "actor" playing Lenin, a nonprofessional worker named Nikandrov, so closely resembles the genuine article that the effect is positively eerie. So authentic is Eisenstein's reconstruction of events that, for years, TV documentaries have been passing off clips from Ten Days That Shook the World as "actual" scenes of the Revolution. While impressive on a technical level, the film never truly stirs the audience's emotions; Eisenstein purists have argued that this "alienation" technique was the director's intention all along, forcing the viewer to observe the events intellectually rather than emotionally. Produced in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the October Revolution, Ten Days That Shook the World was initially titled October. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide Grigory Alexandrov, Sergei Eisenstein N. Strike

The first full-length feature project of pantheon Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein, Strike is a government-commissioned celebration of the unrealized 1905 Bolshevik revolution. The story is set in motion by a series of outrages and humiliations perpetrated on the workers of a metalworks plant. The Czarist regime is unsympathetic to the workers, characteristically helping the plant owners to subjugate the hapless victims. Finally, the workers revolt, staging an all-out strike. Here is where Eisenstein's theory of "the montage of shocks" was given its first major workout. While the notion of juxtaposing short, separate images to heighten tension and excitement was not new, Eisenstein was the first to fully understand the value of using sudden-shock images (a bloody face, a fired weapon, a descending club) to make his dramatic and sociological points. Playing to mixed reviews and small audiences in Russia, Strike proved a success worldwide, assuring Eisenstein complete creative freedom on his next project, the immortal Potemkin. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide Sergei Eisenstein Ivan Klyukvin Alexander Antonov Grigory Alexandrov

When Do We Eat?

An old-fashioned Jewish father vows to bring his stubborn family together after being slipped a dose of ecstasy during the annual Passover celebration in director Salvador Litvak's psychedelic Seder comedy. Family patriarch Ira Stuckman (Michael Lerner) has taken a few tips from his hard-nosed father, Arthur (Jack Klugman), when it comes to matters of the family. A strict disciplinarian with little tolerance for tomfoolery, stubborn Ira is insistent that the whole family come together for the Seder feast despite their lingering disagreements. When Ira's son, Zeke (Ben Feldman), drops a hit of ecstasy into his father's meal in hopes of opening the old man's eyes up to a "new perspective," the once curmudgeonly father turns suddenly touchy-feely before insisting upon on ushering in a new era of forgiveness among the notoriously disagreeable clan. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide Salvador Litvak Cynda Williams Michael Lerner Lesley Ann Warren Ben Feldman Shiri Appleby Adam Lamberg Jack Klugman Mili Avital Meredith Scott Lynn Mark Ivanir Max Greenfield

The Last Time I Saw Paris

Loosely based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's Paradise Revisited, MGM's The Last Time I Saw Paris is a star-studded soap opera, luxuriously lensed by director Richard Brooks. In his last film as an MGM contractee, Van Johnson plays reporter Charles Wills, who while covering the VE Day celebrations in Paris, meets and falls in love with the gorgeous Helen Ellsworth (Elizabeth Taylor). Soon afterward, Charles and Helen are married. Charles supports his wife with a low-paying wire service job, devoting his evenings to writing a novel. After numerous rejections, Charles is more than willing to give up writing and live off the revenue of a Texas oil well in which he'd invested. The Last Time I Saw Paris (Full-Length Movie. 1954)

As he squanders his newfound riches on creature comforts, he loses his literary ambitions and, slowly but surely, the love and devotion of his wife. His self-destructive behavior is halted only by a devastating tragedy. Donna Reed costars as Charles sister-in-law Marion, who carries a torch for him throughout the picture. Arto Lindsay - Habite Em Mim

"Habite Em Mim" from Arto Lindsay's CD Salt. When it comes to unleashing the cultural and sonic clashes between the streets of Rio and New York, no artist has been more proficient than songwriter/producer/guitarist Arto Lindsay. On Salt, his sixth solo album and third on Righteous Babe Records, Lindsay continues to offer an uncanny meld of earthy Bahian grooves and in-your-face electronic textures, exploring the outskirts of both forms and returning with some fantastic melodies. Taking inspiration from Carnaval, Brazil’s yearly celebration of the tawdry and sinful, Salt is both musical celebration and lyrical steam bath. From the opening “Habite em Mim” (translated “Inhabit Me”) to the closing title track (which contains the lines “She covers herself in honey/Stretches but won’t succumb”), this is a visceral, sexually-charged piece of work. Produced by the usual team of bassist Melvin Gibbs, electronic wizards Kassin and Berna Ceppas, and Lindsay, Salt contains an intoxicating blend of harmony and instrumentation. “Into Shade” may be the richest, most elegant song in Lindsay’s catalog, full of lush string arrangements and guitar flutters. “Habite em Mim” and “Personagem” will likely be mined by hip-hop producers for their stark, throbbing beats. “Kamo” (Dark Stripe) is a sleepy, undulating mix of multi-cultural pop. As usual, Lindsay’s voice is soft and seductive, beckoning listeners in both English and Portuguese, with little more than a reedy whisper. It’s altogether fitting that Arto Lindsay has titled his record after one of the most basic and organic substances in Mother Nature’s spice rack. Salt is a wild and surprising ingredient, examining the mysticism of human desire without ever losing sight of the hook. Add a pinch to your daily listening; your senses will be thankful.

Amy Ray: MP3s From Prom

Prom roams over the vast territory of love and gender as contained in the physicality of nature. The subject matter spans a delicate landscape (suicide, racism, gender identification, political idealism, homophobia) but because she sees this awkward journey as both a struggle and a celebration, Ray comes across as curious and unafraid. From the Clash-meets-Phil Spector anthem “Driver Education” to the speedy and catchy social commentary “Blender,” Ray again occupies the space between rock, old-school punk, and folk, and claims this ground as her own.

David Haas - He Is Not Here (Derek Campbell)

Once again, David Haas breaks new ground with his most recent music collection, Before I Was Born. This collection truly celebrates the new millennium with energy, providing new contemporary sounds with settings for Eucharist, sacramental celebrations, various seasons of the liturgical year, and celebrations that involve young people. Ideal for millennium celebrations, Pentecost, and celebrations of initiation, "You Make All Things New" and "Breath of Life" stir the soul and invoke the Spirit. This collection also features songs that reach out to teens and the young-at-heart, especially "With You by My Side," which has already become a popular piece for liturgies, retreats, and other events with young people. David adds a powerful arrangement of the well-known spiritual "Give Me Jesus," and composer friends Lori True and Derek Campbell also contribute songs. This is truly a diverse and spiritually powerful collection for worship and prayer!

Marty Haugen - Halle, Halle

You'll definitely want to consider this one-act theater piece from the creative hand of Marty Haugen for your next choir performance production. Based on the structure of the Roman Liturgy, Agapé utilizes music from many cultures and the prophetic voices of our day to bring alive a story of struggle, hope, and celebration, with parts for adult and children's choirs, soloists, and instrumentalists, and audience participation as well. In addition to Marty's own music and texts, "Halle, Halle, Halle" from The Iona Community and "On Holy Ground" by Donna Peña are also included, plus "Sing Our God Together," co-authored by Marty and David Haas. Since this fine work is based on the Mass, Marty has also provided liturgical renditions of the songs from Agapé.

Now the California scenes rival anything back home in Louisiana..." - Michael Tisserand, author, The Kingdom of Zydeco. 15 tracks from 15 west coast artists (mostly from the greater San Francisco bay area, some including former Louisianas and some who just got swept away with the vital Crescent City fever.

Blake Rainey - Appetizer Sickness

The songs of Blake Rainey are haunted; God, ghosts, dreams, and the natural scene all play a major role in Appetizer Sickness, Rainey's debut solo album. The tunes on Appetizer Sickness are marked by the outcast characters embedded within the remnants of an old world: mill homes and broken sidewalks, bridges abandoned and burned factories all rot along with their inhabitants searching for truth under moon and lamp lit scenery. They struggle each with their own sense of desires and purpose, yet never able to completely lose all hope, transcending in the end with surreal celebration. Rainey grew up near Esom Hill and the Alabama border in Cedartown, Georgia, some 70 years after Sterling Holloway was born there. Though he currently resides in Atlanta, the rustic roots of a rural town forgotten by time are still at the core of Rainey’s music. As Rainey is now hard at work promoting his new solo release, he carries on a parallel universe as the frontman of the loud rock band The Young Antiques. The ‘Tiques’ most recent release, 2003’s Clockworker, was also released by Two Sheds. The ‘Tiques’ post-punk blare and energy sharply contrast the muted introspection of Appetizer Sickness, yet the literary overtones are ties that bind. Rainey also performed on and co-produced (with David Barbe) Faith Kleppinger's Asleep in the Well, which was released by Two Sheds in 2002. Appetizer Sickness was produced by Blake Rainey and Jimmy Ether at the Ether Lounge in Atlanta.
